Critique This

I'm excited about this new blog hop of Monica's from Pixel Perfect. I welcome any one who wants to critique my work and give me tips so I can improve my photography. If you came from Monica's blog, welcome!! Thank you for stopping by!

For this photo, I tried black and white with selective color for the first time. I watched a tutorial on how to do it and this is my first attempt. I'm pretty happy with the result. What do you think?

what a neat shot, love the composition.

The selective coloring is a neat idea, a lot of times I don't like it a lot but it works well with this shot.

The coloring looks interesting but the overall picture doesn't hold my attention for very long. Maybe it is the gray coloring on the rest of the image or the flag looks to close to the cherry picker to really find a subject (since the flag is on color and the picker isn't)

Try zooming in on more of the flag and the left areas of the photo. Good luck!

good shot but needed alittle more zoom on the Flag...

I also think the selective color works with this shot. But I think the subject (the flag) needs to be on the right side. It's in the left third, but my eye keeps wanting to follow the way it's flying and gets stopped right away at the edge of the picture.

The focus is really good though, and I like the branches in front that give an idea of scale.

YOu did a great job doing selective color for the first time!

I agree that the subject gets a little lost in this shot.....one idea you might try is to edit it as if it were taken vertically.....so that the crop is closer to the flag, but you still get the cherry picker in the shot. :)

I like the framing with the branches, and i agree that the selective coloring works well here (I don't typically like it too much). I would crop it in just a little tighter, but agin, I like how the branches frame it. Also I would brighten it a bit, to me it seems a bit dark, BUT I tend to like things on the over exposed side, so that is more of just a personal thing.

The selective coloring is really nice in this photo! I would definitely choose a different angle. The flag is beautiful, but it gets a little bit lost in this photo. Maybe zoom in a little more? :-)

I agree that the flag gets lost in the photo. Try cropping it, placing the shaft of the cherry picker coming directly out of the left corner and get rid of as much of the empty space to the right, as you can.

I am not sure what the before looked like, but I think this would be gorgeous cropped with a bright blue sky behind it. Although, the selective coloring with the flag is very nice.

Also, I am not sure if it is the black and white, but it looks a little underexposed. Try bumping up the exposure.

I like it. I think it looks great. I am not a big fan of selective color but it is wonderful in this shot.
